STYLE EVOLUTION

Thanks so much for the lovely comments on my previous post.  Imogen from Inside Out Style (check out her blog, she's great, and a fellow Aussie), commented how our style is continually evolving and I absolutely agree with that.  The question I found myself asking though, was what, if anything, remains constant as my style continues to evolve?

There are two things that have been relatively constant throughout my style journey and they are layering and the colour black.  I have worn black since I was old enough to buy my own clothes. For periods of time I would wear black exclusively and then introduce pattern and colour for a short while, but colour and pattern never felt authentically me and I would always return to my beloved black.

The foundation of my wardrobe for a long time has been black.  Over the past 5 years I have added white (a big deal because I always thought it made me look big), grey (soft not charcoal) and ink blue.  I have a few items in what I consider to be my accent colours, being cobalt blue and deep red, and then I have a few items in muted abstract patterns - still in my preferred colour palette - BUT my daily norm is all black everything.

Playing with layers is something I have done since the early 2000's.  I recall layering dresses over slim leg ankle pants as one of my go to looks when I was expecting my son in 2003.  As time went on that look evolved into more creative layering of differing lengths, hemlines and textures.

So, is there a point where our style evolution 'slows down' and we can say we have 'found' our style.  A style that is uniquely ours and simply requires ongoing tweaks to ensure we remain current (assuming that is priority).  A style that incorporates elements that continually give us pleasure, is reflective of who we are and never bores us?

Now it may be unwise to put this in writing, but this is where I find myself now.  I definitely see growth and change ahead but I feel that the foundational elements of my style are now in place and unlikely to change.

How about you?  I would love to know your thoughts on how your see your own style evolving.  And what are those elements that remain consistent for you?

Have a great week.

xxx Deborah

  1. I have always had black as the foundation of my wardrobe as well. I had recently questioned this as I have often heard that as we get older black would be too harsh for our colouring. I am 49 and have decided I am going to continue to colour my hair dark brown/ black and continue to have black as the base of my wardrobe because this makes me feel good!
I will admit it does help that I have been told black does "suit" me. When I am 60 ..... who knows!?

    1. wendyzm, thanks for commenting. I think generally we do know what looks good on us. I am kind of hoping when I am 60 my hair might be a lovely natural silver which would look awesome against black :) I bet you do look stunning in black:)

  2. I love how you layer your outfits. It is also amazes me that the black clothes do not wash out your face. I usually look pale unless put extra make up.

    1. Thanks for your comment :) I do always wear makeup and can look very 'flat' and wishy washing wearing black with no colour on my face.

  3. I always admire how cohesive your looks are, Deborah. I think in addition to black and layers, you also have an amazing eye for proportion and everything always looks like it belongs together.

I still feel like I have no true handle on my style - I like too many different looks and what can feel perfect one day can be completely opposite to what feels right the next. I think the one two underlying elements are femininity and neutrals. Apart from that, it's all up for grabs!

    1. Thanks so much Sharon. Despite what you say I feel you have quite a strong, consistent elements to your style. I think you have the ability to make a look yours. I see your style as very modern and a little alternate with a touch of trend thrown in. :)

    1. Lovely blog Mummabstylish :) I will pop over again later and have more of a read. Thanks for your comment. The development of our personal style is definitely a work in progress and I will read with interest as you add those accent colours.

  5. Hi Deborah! I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, double mastectomy and now some chemo. Found your blog thru another blogger who does styles specifically for those of us not choosing reconstruction after mastectomy. I live in the US (Italian) and never see any Australian designers here. So sad! You guys have such amazing style and gorgeous combinations. I would love to know if you do consultations - even tho my Mamma was a major fashionista I did not inherit her skill. Please let me know. Thank you for your blog!
