Harem Scarem

So how do we feel about Harem pants?  I have seen a number of people totally rock various iterations of the look, and as a result they have been playing on my mind for months.

After much online browsing, I decided the style I wanted was more of a harem legging, as I generally prefer a slim leg, which I found at Urban Outfitters.  I wore them for the first time today... and loved them.

sleeveless jacket : zara
jersey top : cotton on
harem leggings : urban outfitters
booties : hush puppies
clutch : guess

There are some fabulously stylish harem pants available, two of my favourites would be Une Femme d'un Certain Age (Eilleen Fisher) and Odyssey Home (Rick Owens) (scroll down to the blog post for 19/4/13)

As we head into Winter here, I see these being quite a versatile item.  Worn with a mid length slightly oversized topper for casual and a structured blazer for work.

So are harem pants on your radar?  They are a garment that appears to sit on the fringe.  Never truly in style but never out of style!  To my mind this makes them an 'alternate classic'.

I would like to say a huge thank you to Sylvia at 40+ Style for interviewing me for her Style Interview series.  It was a real highlight to be included on a blog I have read and enjoyed for a number of years.

And I am linking up once again with the fabulous Patti over at Visable Monday @ Not Dead Yet Style

  1. You look great in this outfit! I don't own any harem pants, but sometimes I think I would benefit from how comfortable they are.

  4. I think they look great, a mix between pants and a skirt. You are worn them in a elegant way here that highlights the whole silhouette. I been looking at the dressy sweat pants out in the world, they have an interesting feel also. Love the red lip color. Just bought some yesterday, see if I can wear it.

    1. Love to know what you think if the sweatpants if you try some on. I have seen some in lovely crepe fabrications and others that are actually more sweatpants-ish...I think the dressy versions can be quite elegant. The right shade of red lip should look quite stunning on you Ann

  5. They look great on you and I like how you've styled them - very chic, which is refreshing considering all the boho interpretations I've seen. Last summer in Annecy, all the women were wearing flowy harem pants made if lightweight cotton. They paired them (as they seem to do with everything) with ankle boots as the summer waned. It was a cool look, but I don't think I could go back to wearing them (perhaps it was my teasing my sis, circa 1986, about her "poop pants", that has come back to haunt me).

    1. Kelly, my sister calls these my "hammer pants" and a dress I have with draping at the back, my "diaper dress".. But she can tease me all she likes...I love both;)

  6. You are wearing them well. Not a fan myself, as Kelly suggests a 80's hangover, with a not to flattering nickname. Each to their own.

  7. I have never owned one but they look really beautiful on you. I love how you've styled it with the boots. I might be brave and get one this winter.

    1. I think the key is making something "yours". I don't like to limit myself to how I see things worn but rather work out how I want to wear it, and what I want to convey. Definitely worth a try.

  8. These look great on you, Deborah. This is a style I just cannot make work for me, and believe me I have tried! I think your style is just right to be able to incorporate avant guard/alternative pieces and have them look elegant and sophisticated.

  9. Sharon, I am suprised! I would have your thought your figure would manage the extra volume of this style much better than mine:). How about a slouchy pant?

  10. I'm surprised how much I like these on you ... monochromatic styling and your blazer snazzes these up and takes them to classic looking. I think you're right.
And they sure do lengthen that torso! Boy, howdy!
Seriously, they drape beautifully, and you wear them well.

  14. I really haven't given harem pants a thought. Hmm. You look great in them. I'm not sure if they would look good on me. Guess I'll have to give them a try at some point.
